Artist: Bertil Vallien
Dimensions: 35×36×34 cm
A hand-forged fire dog in the shape of a phoenix.
The object was designed by Bertil Vallien in the mid-1960s.

The story of the phoenix is about a mythical, fire-colored bird that is reborn from its own ashes. Originally a sacred bird in ancient Egypt, called Bennu, it was associated with the sun god Ra, creation and the cycles of life.
In Greek mythology, it built a newly captured nest, burned it, and was resurrected as a young, immortal bird.

Symbolism and meaning
Rebirth: The phoenix stands for rising from the ruins, stronger than before.
Eternity: It embodies the idea that life never really ends - it changes, transforms.
Transformation: The fire that destroys is also the fire that purifies and creates new.
Resilience: A powerful metaphor for overcoming adversity and starting over.

What is a fire dog used for?
It is placed in the firebox to lift the wood from the bottom, improving airflow.
The result: easier to get a fire going and a more efficient fire.
It acts as a log support, making the fire both more beautiful and more functional.

Where is it suitable?
Design-conscious homes where art and function go hand in hand.
Cottages and older houses with fireplaces - where rustic charm is part of the décor.
Modern settings that want a unique, mythological element in their fireplace design.
Hotels, galleries or lounge areas where atmosphere and story are important.
